In some states, high school sports were played mostly by males until 1973 when Title IX was passed, allowing for more female participation in competitive sports. Tackling Equality: Federal Class Action Civil Rights Litigation for Female Athletes will highlight the ongoing efforts of attorneys fighting for fairness in women’s sports.

At the 2021 ITLA Annual Meeting, Conference, and Seminar, Brent Gordon and Loren Washburn will share their experience litigating a civil rights action for girls who want to play the same sports offered to boys, including formulating causes of action, certifying a class, taking discovery, filing dispositive motions, and trying the case over three weeks during a global pandemic.

Learn more about Brent and Loren below and take a look at the complete seminar schedule here.
Brent Gordon has twenty years of experience representing plaintiffs in personal injury cases. He helped create the first all-girls tackle football league in the country. The league has grown from 50 to 500 participants. Brent filed a Title IX lawsuit on behalf of a group of high school girls against three school districts and the Utah High School Activities Association to add girls' football teams to the lineup of sports offered to girls. Brent is an owner of the Parke Gordon Law Firm and is an Eagle Member of ITLA.

Loren Washburn is a skilled trial lawyer who has tried dozens of trials in federal and state courts. Loren graduated from Harvard Law School and then clerked for the Tenth Circuit. After his clerkship, he became a trial lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuting white-collar crime. Loren then entered private practice representing individuals in complex and sometimes high-profile matters. He is currently a partner at Armstrong Teasdale. Loren loves the strategic elements of the law involved in developing and executing a winning game plan.
